Evidence Based Treatment for Anxiety, Depression & Trauma

You are not alone.

It can be scary to let others know that you are struggling. You may feel pressure to be happy all the time and not burden others with your problems. According to a recent study, approximately 40% of Nova Scotians report experiencing a mental health concern in their lifetime. That means you are not alone in this. You are not broken or bad for struggling. You are human being with limits in a world that keeps throwing things your way.

Sometimes we just

need someone to

talk to.

Hi, my name is Steve Gates and I have been working in mental health for 15 years with 7 years working as a counsellor with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In my work, I blend my training with your expertise about you.

Here’s how I help

  • Single Session (90 minute session)

Sometimes a single session is all that is needed to help you problem solve, punch up your own self help efforts or a booster session to help get you back on track.

  • Coping with Stress (1-5 sessions)

This is by far the most common presenting issue for clients in our community. Each of us is doing our best to manage competing priorities, limited resources and situations that are caustic and/or difficult to accept. My preference is that we do not work for more than 5 sessions on chronic stress to avoid keeping you in an unhealthy environment.

  • Evidence Based Treatment (8-12 sessions)

Once safety has been established in your day to day life, you may seek to address a longer term pattern. There are lots of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy protocols we can work through together for Depression, Anxiety or Trauma. I have worked regularly with people on childhood trauma, social anxiety, panic attacks, addictions, and psychosis. These treatments are effective, but please be prepared for daily practice and intensive record keeping for this option.
